Dog-Friendly Summer Adventure from Bend – Idea 7 – Refreshing Escape: Tumalo Falls

Join us on a picturesque hike alongside the tranquil Tumalo Creek, where you and your four-legged friend can marvel at cascading waterfalls!

Hiking along the trail beside Tumalo Creek to witness Tumalo Falls and Double Falls was undoubtedly one of our most cherished experiences near Bend in the Deschutes National Forest. Just a 30-minute drive from Bend, the Tumalo Falls Trailhead offers a perfect afternoon retreat amidst the summer weather and natural beauty. The parking lot at the trailhead is rather small, often leading visitors to park along Tumalo Falls Road. Fortunately, we snagged a spot in the lot as another party was leaving.

The majestic 97-foot Tumalo Falls is a short stroll from the parking lot, with a well-paved path leading directly to its awe-inspiring sight. The cascade’s grandeur, coupled with the cool mist from the water, offers a refreshing experience.

Continuing along the paved dirt Tumalo Falls Trail beside Tumalo Creek, we found the trail less crowded beyond the Tumalo Falls Viewpoint. Here, we noticed several hikers enjoying the walk with their dogs off-leash, prompting me to allow Toby the same freedom.

There are several water access points along this trail where you can descend a short distance, stepping slightly away from the trail to enjoy the water of Tumalo Creek. The water is cold and very refreshing, especially in the summer heat. Toby, who normally doesn’t like water because he dislikes getting his paws wet, didn’t hesitate to dip his paws and drink from the fresh natural water for a nice break.

About a mile from the Tumalo Falls Viewpoint, we were treated to another marvel: Double Falls. True to its name, the sight featured two breathtaking waterfalls, a picturesque addition to our journey. The short 30 minute hike to witness Double Falls was undoubtedly worth the effort before making our way back!
