Dog-Friendly Trail Options
After parking, follow the Rim Trail towards the welcome center. Then, descend along the Canyon Trail, leading to the bottom where you’ll cross the Crooked River via a bridge to begin your adventure
You have several options for exploring this marvelous state park and enjoying its unique rock formations.
Once you cross the river and reach the bottom of Smith Rock, you can either walk to the right on the Wolf Tree Trail or turn left to follow the River Trail. Both trails are dirt paths that run alongside the Crooked River, offering stunning scenic views of the park.
For those seeking a challenging hike, consider the Misery Ridge Trail. This path ascends steeply and can be rocky in certain parts, so it’s not recommended for casual strolls or older dogs. Toby and I enjoyed the workout and the breathtaking view from the top, but it was indeed a strenuous climb. The descent via the River Trail and Mesa Verde Trail completes a loop around Smith Rock, a lengthy journey that took us about 3.5 hours. Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for both you and your furry companion, especially on hot summer days. Toby was thoroughly exhausted afterward, but this hike was one of the most memorable we’ve experienced near Bend. I highly recommend exploring Smith Rock State Park!
