Dog-Friendly Summer Adventure from Bend – Idea 5 – Chasing the Sunset: Pilot Butte

Experience the breathtaking beauty of a summer sunset while gazing out over the city of Bend and the majestic Cascade Range from the summit of Pilot Butte.

Pilot Butte is a prominent volcanic cinder cone formed over 500,000 years ago during a period of volcanic activity in the region. It rises approximately 500 feet above the surrounding landscape. The butte served as a navigational landmark for early pioneers and travelers in the 19th century, guiding them through the rugged terrain of Central Oregon.

The butte is accessible year-round, with trails suitable for hikers of all skill levels. Interpretive signs along the trails provide information about the area’s geology, history, and ecology, enhancing the visitor experience. Best of all, the hike is dog-friendly so you can take your furry companion with you!

You can drive or hike to the summit with your dog. If you choose to hike, you can park at the Pilot Butte Trailhead parking lot, where there are plenty of spots. On average, it takes approximately 30-40 minutes to hike to the summit using the main trail, known as the Summit Trail. This dirt trail is about 1.5 miles round trip and offers a moderate ascent with switchbacks. However, some hikers may take longer if they prefer a slower pace or stop frequently to enjoy the scenery or take breaks. There isn’t much shade on this trail, so if you’re going during the day, don’t forget your hat and sunscreen. And, of course, bring plenty of water for yourself and your furry companion. Definitely give yourself enough time for the hike and check the daily sunset time to make sure you catch the sunset at the summit. The view at the summit is undoubtedly worth the hike!
