Dog-Friendly Summer Adventure from Bend – Idea 4 – Following the Deschutes River

Come along with us as we embark on an evening walk along the Deschutes River, beginning at the Riverbend Dog Park.

The Deschutes River played a crucial role in the development of Bend, serving as a vital water source for early settlers, agriculture, and industry. Its steady flow supported the growth of communities along its banks and powered early mills and factories, contributing to the area’s economic prosperity. Today, the Deschutes River is a beloved recreational hub, offering opportunities for fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and rafting. Its scenic beauty and diverse ecosystem draw outdoor enthusiasts from near and far, providing residents and visitors (and their furry companions) alike with a natural playground to explore and enjoy.

Riverbend Dog Park

We started our evening exploration along the Deschutes River at the Riverbend Dog Park. The parking lot is large and spacious, so we had no problem finding parking. The off-leash dog park is fairly large, though it’s not covered with grass; instead, it’s surfaced with pebbles, dirt, and wood chips. I personally don’t mind, but be prepared for your pup to get a little dusty after hanging out here. If you visit on a sunny afternoon, there’s an area just outside the off-leash area where you can take a dip in the river with your furry companion, if your dog enjoys water. Although Toby doesn’t like water and we visited in the evening, we did see one or two people with their dogs enjoying the river.

Riverbend Park

As we progressed along the Deschutes River, we strolled from the Dog Park to Riverbend Park, connected by a beautifully paved trail tracing the river westward. Riverbend Park welcomed us with lush greenery and expansive grassy areas. Many locals were out enjoying a leisurely evening walk, and we even spotted a few individuals practicing yoga amidst the tranquil surroundings. Walking alongside the river in the park was incredibly serene, especially as we were treated to a breathtaking sunset casting vibrant hues across the evening sky.

Farewell Bend Park

We continued our westward journey, although the path extends further in that direction, we opted to cross the metal bridge to explore the other side. Our exploration led us to Farewell Bend Park, which boasted charming picnic areas and lumber mill-themed playgrounds perfect for children to enjoy.

Deschutes River Trail

Continuing west from this park, the Deschutes River begins to bend southward, with the Deschutes River Trail stretching along both sides for several miles. If you’re inclined, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll with your furry companion for quite a while. Additionally, cycling is permitted on this trail for those who prefer it.
