Join Toby and me on our scenic drive from Bellevue to Boise, where we take a refreshing hike to the Columbia River and the Twin Sisters Rocks.
After spending some time in Bellevue, Toby and I set off for our next destination: Boise, Idaho. The drive promised beautiful scenery, and we decided to break up the journey with a little hike to see the Columbia River and the Twin Sisters Rocks. It turned out to be a fantastic decision, offering both of us a refreshing break and some unforgettable sights.
We left Bellevue early in the morning, with Toby comfortably settled in the back seat. The drive started on I-90, with stunning views of the Cascade Mountains gradually giving way to the rolling hills and plains of Eastern Washington. The changing landscape kept the drive interesting, and Toby seemed to enjoy the journey as much as I did. After a while, we transitioned onto I-82, which continued to offer beautiful scenery as we neared the Columbia River.
We found a suitable spot to park at the trail head for the Twin Sisters Rock and set off on our hike. The trail we chose was moderately challenging, winding through a mix of shrubland and rocky terrain. The path wasn’t very well-marked, so it felt like a true adventure, with the Columbia River occasionally peeking through the gaps in the vegetation. It was pretty hot under the afternoon sun as there weren’t any shades but the spectacular views of the river and the surrounding cliffs made it all worthwhile.
The highlight of the hike was undoubtedly the Twin Sisters Rocks, two towering rock formations that stand sentinel over the river. These ancient rocks have a storied past and are significant in local Native American lore. Standing at their base, with the vast expanse of the Columbia River stretching out below, was a humbling experience. The trail offered several viewpoints, each providing a different perspective of the river and the Twin Sisters Rocks. We took our time, stopping frequently to enjoy the scenery and let Toby explore. The cool breeze coming off the river was a welcome relief from the midday sun.
Toby was in his element, sniffing at everything and occasionally chasing after small critters that scurried across the path. The rocky terrain was a bit challenging for him at times, but he navigated it like a pro. We made sure to take plenty of breaks, giving him water and snacks to keep his energy up.
After spending about an hour on the trail, we headed back to the car, feeling refreshed and invigorated. The hike was a perfect way to break up the long drive and offered a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature. Toby seemed happy and content, enjoying a nap in the back seat as we continued our journey to Boise.
This impromptu hike to see the Columbia River and the Twin Sisters Rocks was a highlight of our trip. It reminded me of the importance of taking the time to explore and appreciate the natural beauty along the way, rather than just focusing on the destination. If you find yourself driving between Bellevue and Boise, I highly recommend making a stop to explore the trails around the Columbia River. The hike to the Twin Sisters Rocks is particularly rewarding, offering stunning views and a touch of adventure. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, and a sense of curiosity!
Stay tuned for more adventures as we continue our journey to Boise, Idaho, and discover what this vibrant city has to offer for both me and Toby.
