Join Toby and me as we explore the natural hot springs of Boise National Forest, hike the towering dunes at Bruneau Dunes State Park, and marvel at the breathtaking Shoshone Falls!
Boise, Idaho, is not only a fantastic city to explore but also a perfect base for exciting day trips with your dog. Toby and I have discovered some incredible destinations just a short drive from Boise that are ideal for adventurous outings. Here are some of our favorite day trip ideas!
Boise National Forest – Rocky Canyon Hot Springs
A trip to the Boise National Forest is a must for nature enthusiasts. One of our favorite spots within the forest is the Rocky Canyon Hot Springs. This was not on our itinerary at all, but our wonderful local Airbnb host was kind enough to invite us to this adventure and show us around! Located about an hour and a half drive from Boise, these natural hot springs are nestled along the Middle Fork of the Payette River. The drive itself is scenic, with winding roads that take you through dense forests and along beautiful river valleys.
Upon arrival, a short walk across a river leads you to the hot springs. The river is not super strong although it can be a bit rocky and slippery in places so definitely be careful. You should bring water shoes if you have them. Toby does not like getting his paws wet so I had to carry him across the river… Once we got to the other side of the river, Toby enjoyed the surroundings, eagerly exploring the new scents and sights. The hot springs are a series of pools that cascade down the hillside, offering varying temperatures. It’s a perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty while your dog explores the surrounding area.
Bruneau Dunes State Park
Bruneau Dunes State Park is another fantastic day trip destination, located about an hour south of Boise. This unique park is home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, rising approximately 470 feet high. The park offers a variety of activities, including hiking, sandboarding, and stargazing.
Toby and I loved hiking up the dunes, although it was a bit of a workout and it was really hot with no shades around at all! The views from the top are breathtaking, with miles of sand dunes stretching out before you. The park also has several trails around the dunes and the small lake, which provide a nice change of scenery. Toby enjoyed running up and down the dunes and feeling the hot sand on his paws. Be sure to bring plenty of water and be mindful of the hot sand during the summer months. You could maybe put on some paw protectors for the pups. Early morning or late afternoon visits are best to avoid the heat.
Shoshone Falls & Twin Falls
A visit to Shoshone Falls, often referred to as the “Niagara of the West,” is a must-do day trip from Boise. Located about two hours southeast of Boise, Shoshone Falls is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States, even higher than Niagara Falls at 212 feet.
The drive to Shoshone Falls takes you through the scenic Snake River Canyon. Once you arrive, there are several viewing platforms that offer stunning views of the falls. Toby was mesmerized by the sight and sound of the rushing water. The park surrounding the falls has picnic areas, walking trails, and plenty of open space for your dog to enjoy. After visiting Shoshone Falls, you can take a short drive to Twin Falls, where you can explore more of the beautiful canyon and river landscapes. Definitely don’t forget plenty of water during the summer!
Boise is a great starting point for a variety of exciting day trips with your dog. Whether you’re soaking in natural hot springs, hiking up towering sand dunes, or marveling at magnificent waterfalls, these destinations offer plenty of adventure and natural beauty. Toby and I have cherished our day trips from Boise, and we highly recommend these spots for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors with their dogs.
