Join Toby and me in Sedona as we attempt the Devil’s Bridge Trail, only to be turned back by the intense heat, and then enjoy a relaxing meal at the dog-friendly Mesa Grill Sedona. Discover the beauty and challenges of exploring this stunning town with your furry friend.
Sedona, Arizona, is renowned for its stunning red rock formations, vibrant arts scene, and outdoor adventures. Toby and I recently visited this beautiful town and had an unforgettable experience. From attempting to hike the Devil’s Bridge Trail to enjoying a delicious meal at the dog-friendly Mesa Grill Sedona, our trip was filled with both challenges and relaxation. Here’s a detailed account of our visit to Sedona.
Arriving in Sedona
The drive from Flagstaff (where we stayed the night before) into Sedona down highway 89A was spectacular, with towering red rock formations greeting us as we approached the town. The drive through the Slide Rock State Park was stunning; I would recommend stopping by if you have more time. Toby seemed just as excited as I was, eagerly looking out the window at the changing scenery. Sedona’s unique landscape, characterized by its vibrant red rocks and lush greenery, creates a dramatic and picturesque backdrop.
Attempting the Devil’s Bridge Trail
Our first adventure was to hike the Devil’s Bridge Trail, one of Sedona’s most famous hikes. Devil’s Bridge is the largest natural sandstone arch in the area, offering stunning views and a unique photo opportunity. The trailhead is accessible via a dirt road, so if you don’t have a high-clearance vehicle, you can park at the Mescal Trailhead and add a bit of extra hiking distance, which is what we had to do.
We set out early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds. Despite our early start, the temperature was already rising rapidly. The trail is about 4 miles round trip from the Mescal Trailhead, but we quickly realized that the intense heat was going to be a problem. Toby and I managed to walk about 15 minutes into the trail before the lack of shade and the scorching temperatures became too much.
The trail offers no shade, and the rocky terrain radiates heat, making it dangerous for dogs to be exposed for long periods. Recognizing the risks, we decided to turn back to ensure Toby’s safety. It was disappointing not to complete the hike, but Toby’s well-being was our top priority. For anyone planning to hike Devil’s Bridge, I strongly recommend going very early in the morning or during cooler months to avoid the intense heat. As a reference, we went the first week of September and it was still scorching hot!

Lunch at Mesa Grill Sedona
After our brief attempt at the Devil’s Bridge Trail, we were both ready for some relaxation and a good meal. We headed to Mesa Grill Sedona, a popular restaurant located at the Sedona Airport, which offers stunning views of the surrounding red rocks. The restaurant has a dog-friendly patio, making it the perfect spot for Toby and me to enjoy a meal together.
The staff at Mesa Grill Sedona were incredibly welcoming, providing Toby with a bowl of water and a few treats. The patio offered a shaded, comfortable place to relax, and the views were fantastic. I ordered a delicious sandwich and a refreshing drink while Toby rested at my feet, content after our morning walk. The restaurant also has a dedicated menu for dogs if you want to treat your furry companion!
The food at Mesa Grill Sedona was excellent, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was a perfect way to unwind and refuel after our adventure on the Devil’s Bridge Trail. Toby seemed to enjoy the ambiance as well, happily watching the other diners and soaking up the sun.
Exploring Sedona
After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll around Sedona, exploring some of the local shops and galleries. The town is known for its vibrant arts scene, and there are plenty of unique boutiques and art galleries to visit. While some shops don’t allow dogs inside, there are many outdoor areas where Toby and I could wander and enjoy the sights.
We also visited some of Sedona’s scenic viewpoints, taking in the panoramic views of the red rock formations that make this area so famous. Sedona’s natural beauty is truly captivating, and it was a joy to experience it with Toby by my side.
Our visit to Sedona was a memorable and enriching experience, despite the heat cutting our hike short. Attempting the Devil’s Bridge Trail highlighted the importance of being mindful of the weather, especially when traveling with a dog. Dining at the dog-friendly Mesa Grill Sedona was a perfect way to relax and enjoy a delicious meal after our morning adventure.
If you’re planning a trip to Sedona, I highly recommend visiting during the cooler months, avoiding June through September. Devil’s Bridge Trail is stunning, but ensure it’s safe for both you and your furry friend. There are many other famous and beautiful trails in Sedona too, if time and weather allow!
