Toby and I recently embarked on a road trip from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas, and one of the highlights of our journey was our visit to Cedar Breaks National Monument. This lesser-known gem offers breathtaking views, vibrant rock formations, and a unique alpine environment that’s perfect for a memorable adventure with your furry friend. Here’s a detailed account of our visit to Cedar Breaks and why it’s a must-see destination.
The Drive and First Impression
Leaving Salt Lake City early in the morning, we drove south on Interstate 15, enjoying the scenic landscapes of Utah. After a few hours, we turned onto Highway 143, also known as the Patchwork Parkway. This road winds through picturesque meadows and forests, gradually climbing in elevation as we neared Cedar Breaks.
As we approached Cedar Breaks National Monument, we were greeted by stunning vistas and the cool mountain air. The monument sits at a high altitude, with its rim elevation ranging from approximately 10,000 to 10,500 feet above sea level. This elevation contributes to the park’s unique environment, characterized by its cooler temperatures and alpine vegetation.
Exploring the Overlooks
We started our exploration at the north end of the monument, stopping at several overlooks along the way to take in the breathtaking views.
North View Overlook: Our first stop offered stunning panoramic views of the colorful rock formations and deep canyons below. Toby and I took some time to enjoy the fresh mountain air and take in the breathtaking scenery.
Chessman Ridge Overlook: Next, we visited Chessman Ridge Overlook, which provided another perspective of the vast amphitheater. The vibrant colors of the rock formations were even more striking from this viewpoint.
Sunset View: As the name suggests, Sunset View is an excellent spot to watch the sun set over the monument. Although it wasn’t sunset when we visited, the view was still magnificent, with the sun casting beautiful shadows across the landscape.
Point Supreme: Our final stop at Cedar Breaks was Point Supreme, the most famous viewpoint in the park. We actually walked here from Sunset Viewpoint. This trail, about two miles round trip, follows the rim of the amphitheater and offers spectacular views along the way. The trail is relatively easy, though the high altitude can make it a bit more challenging. Toby enjoyed sniffing around and exploring the trail, and we both appreciated the peacefulness and natural beauty of the surroundings. At the Point Supreme viewpoint, we had a sweeping view of the entire amphitheater, with its intricate formations and vivid colors. Toby seemed to enjoy the cool breeze and the expansive views.
Tips for Visiting Cedar Breaks with Your Dog
Leash and Control: Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times within the park. This helps protect the delicate environment and ensures the safety of both your pet and local wildlife.
Water and Snacks: The high altitude and dry climate can be dehydrating, so make sure to bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. Pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up.
Weather: The weather at high elevations can be unpredictable. Even in summer, it can be cool, so bring layers for you and your dog. I actually had to wear a sweatshirt because it was about 25 degrees (Farenheit) cooler at the monument!
Respect the Environment: Stay on designated trails to help preserve the fragile alpine ecosystem. Clean up after your dog to keep the park beautiful for everyone.
