Dog-Friendly Spots in Salt Lake City

Discover the best dog-friendly walking and hiking spots in Salt Lake City with Toby and me!

Salt Lake City is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and it’s also incredibly welcoming to furry friends. Toby and I have explored some fantastic places to walk and hike, each offering unique experiences and beautiful scenery. Here are our top picks for dog-friendly outings in Salt Lake City.

Rotary Glen Dog Park

Located near the mouth of Emigration Canyon, Rotary Glen Dog Park is a spacious, off-leash park where dogs can run freely and socialize. There are plenty of parking spots outside the entrance. The park is well-fenced and features a mix of grassy areas and shaded spots, making it perfect for both high-energy pups and those who prefer a leisurely stroll. Behind the open area, you can walk into the forest as well and escape from direct sun. Toby loved the freedom to roam and play with other dogs here. There are also several walking paths around the park, allowing for a pleasant walk while your dog explores.

Gilgal Sculpture Garden

Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a hidden gem in Salt Lake City. This unique little park features a collection of quirky and fascinating sculptures created by Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. The garden is small but offers a delightful and peaceful setting for a walk. The people working on the gardens were very welcoming and nice to us as well. Toby and I enjoyed wandering through the sculptures, with each one sparking curiosity and conversation. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and the garden’s quiet atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for a relaxed stroll.

International Peace Gardens

The International Peace Gardens, located in Jordan Park, is a beautiful and culturally enriching place to explore with your dog. Established in 1939, the gardens feature sections representing various countries, each designed with unique landscaping and cultural elements. Toby and I enjoyed walking the paths and admiring the diverse plantings and sculptures. It’s a peaceful and educational experience, and the shaded areas make it a comfortable outing even on warmer days. Dogs are welcome on-leash, and there are plenty of benches where you can sit and take in the serene surroundings.

Ensign Peak

For those seeking a bit of a workout with rewarding views, the hike up Ensign Peak is a must. Located just north of downtown Salt Lake City, this short but steep trail offers panoramic views of the city and the Great Salt Lake. The trail is well-marked and takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the top. Toby and I enjoyed the challenge, and the view from the summit was well worth the effort. We timed it so that we can enjoy the sunset from the top, and many people had the same ide! Be sure to bring water for both you and your pup, especially on hot days.

Additional Recommended Areas

While we didn’t have the chance to visit these spots, they come highly recommended for dog-friendly outings in Salt Lake City:

Lake Blanche: A scenic and moderately challenging hike in the Wasatch Mountains, offering beautiful views and a serene alpine lake.

Donut Falls: A popular and relatively easy hike that leads to a unique waterfall where the water flows through a donut-shaped hole in the rock.

Liberty Park: One of Salt Lake City’s oldest and largest parks, featuring plenty of walking paths, open spaces, and a designated off-leash area for dogs.
